What we are responding to

The situation

Children walk as far as 11 kilometres to school, often barefoot and on an empty stomach. Drought and unpredictable rainfall have left parents who once farmed successfully unable to make ends meet, and some children eat only the wild fruit they can pick on the way.

They arrive thirsty, with no water to drink, into overcrowded classrooms where resources are scarce. Hunger makes concentration nearly impossible.

Health problems go untreated because there is no hospital nearby and no money for transport. A pupil at Basenga Secondary School cannot see the board clearly and sits his Grade 12 exams this year. A Grade 12 girl at Mbila Secondary School has asthma and stays home through winter for fear of an attack, because she has no inhaler.

Delivery

What the programme actually does

Food, water and sanitation

  • Drill water boreholes at rural schools.
  • Distribute meals to all pupils, and sanitary pads to female pupils.

Health

  • Travel to rural schools across the country to find pupils and teachers who need medical attention, and get them seen.
  • Train teachers as health care givers.
  • Build health rooms and clinics at rural schools.
