What we are responding to
The situation
Around 85% of the pupils we work with are raised by a single parent, in most cases their mother, shouldering the weight of parenting alone.
The consequences fall hardest on girls. Early marriage is used as an escape from poverty, and childhoods end before they should.
Many pupils are also carrying abuse or trauma that no one at school is equipped to help them with.
Delivery
What the programme actually does
In schools
- School-based counselling sessions for pupils.
- Parenting support for guardians who ask for it.
In communities
- Work hand in hand with chiefs, headmen and community members to keep girls in school.
- Provide a safe and supportive environment for girls returning to education.

This does not work alone
$120,240 Mathematics and Sciences Education Development Project Putting qualified mathematics and science teachers in rural classrooms, and training the teachers already there. $113,884 Education Meals and Education Health Project Two meals a day, clean water, and medical attention for pupils who would otherwise go without any of the three.
