What we are responding to

The situation

Rural schools in Zambia face an acute shortage of teachers, and the shortage is worst in mathematics and the sciences. Many teachers decline rural postings, leaving schools severely understaffed.

The conditions behind those refusals are concrete: limited access to health facilities, food and clean water; poor roads; inadequate housing; and few opportunities for professional development or career advancement.

The effect on pupils is a rural school passing rate of around 20%, and a choice families should never have to make — send a child to school, or keep them home to help with farming and household work.

Delivery
